Business loan leads: types, costs and the alternative to buying them

Updated

Business loan leads are contact records for business owners who may need financing, sold to lenders, brokers and ISOs. In 2026 they range from about $0.05 per aged record to $200 or more per live transfer. Most are sold to several buyers at once, so cost per funded deal matters more than price per lead.

Key takeaways

  • Four main types: aged, shared real-time, exclusive real-time and live transfers.
  • Shared leads are usually sold to several buyers, which turns every lead into a race to the phone.
  • Judge a source by cost per funded deal, not price per lead. Our calculator does the math.
  • The alternative is owning the outreach: contacting every business in your buy box under your own name.

What is a business loan lead?

A business loan lead is information about a business owner who might want financing: at minimum a name, business name and phone or email, and often requested amount, time in business, monthly revenue and credit range. Lead vendors collect these from web forms, call centers, data lists and public filings, then sell them to lenders, brokers and independent sales organizations (ISOs).

The word covers very different things. A record pulled from a two-year-old list and a business owner on the phone right now are both sold as leads. That is why price alone tells you little.

What types of business loan leads are there?

Typical 2026 prices from vendor price pages and industry guides, reviewed October 2026. Your quotes will vary.
Lead typeTypical priceWho else gets itIntent
Aged leads$0.05 to $8 per recordEveryone who bought the listLow: inquiry was 30 days to a year ago
Shared real-time leads$10 to $40 per leadOften several buyers within minutesMedium: fresh, but contested
Exclusive real-time leads$25 to $200 per leadOnly you (if the vendor keeps its word)Medium to high
Live transfers$40 to $200+ per callOnly youHigh: owner is on the line
UCC or trigger data$0.20 to $5 per recordEveryone who bought the dataSignal only: no stated need

Aged leads are cheap because many people have already called them. Shared real-time leads arrive fresh but go to several funders, so the fastest dialer usually wins. Exclusive leads and live transfers cost more because nobody else should be calling, though exclusivity is hard to verify. UCC data lists businesses with existing secured financing, which tells you about debt, not about a need. Our MCA leads guide covers the same types for merchant cash advance.

How much do business loan leads cost in 2026?

Across the vendor price pages and guides we reviewed in October 2026, prices run from a few cents per aged record to $200 or more per live transfer. Full application packages with bank statements sit at the top of that range.

The number that matters is cost per funded deal: total spend divided by the deals it produced. A $25 shared lead that funds 3 times in 100 costs about $833 per funded deal. A $125 live transfer that funds 15 times in 100 costs about $833 too. Neither figure includes the people and dialer time needed to work the leads, which is heaviest for aged data.

Run your own numbers in the lead cost per funded deal calculator.

Why do so many lenders end up unhappy with bought leads?

  • You are rarely first. Shared leads go to several buyers, and the owner who filled in a form usually hears from many funders in an hour.
  • Fit is an afterthought. Leads are filtered by a few fields. They are not chosen because they suit your credit box.
  • Quality drifts. The same vendor can send strong leads one month and recycled ones the next, and returns policies vary.
  • You own nothing. When you stop paying, the flow stops. The relationship was with the vendor's form, not with you.

What is the alternative to buying business loan leads?

Instead of waiting for owners who fill in forms, you contact every business that fits your buy box before it starts shopping. Lenders already do a version of this with referral partners and relationship managers. Outbound email does it at scale.

  1. Define the buy box: industries, revenue, time in business, states and deal size.
  2. Map every business that fits and find the decision makers (owner, CEO, CFO).
  3. Email each one from your own name every 60 days, with extra touches when a business shows a signal such as new equipment, hiring or expansion.
  4. When an owner replies, pass them to your team with a mobile number while they are warm.

The trade-off is time. Outreach needs warmed domains (2 to 3 weeks) and builds over the first cycle, while bought leads arrive the day you pay. The upside is that the replies are exclusive by design, and the pipeline, domains and data stay yours. This is the service Tentt Finance runs for lenders. See how it works and pricing.

How do you choose a business loan lead source?

  • Ask how the lead was generated, word for word, and whether it was sold to anyone else.
  • Ask for a returns policy for bad numbers, duplicates and out-of-box leads.
  • Start with a small test and measure cost per funded deal, not contact rate.
  • Check consent records if the vendor calls or texts owners. TCPA rules apply to calls and texts.
  • Compare against a source you own, such as referrals or outbound, over the same 90 days.

Frequently asked questions

Are business loan leads worth buying?

+

They can be, if you measure cost per funded deal and the source fits your credit box. Many lenders find shared leads too contested and move to exclusive leads, live transfers or their own outreach.

What is the difference between exclusive and shared leads?

+

A shared lead is sold to several buyers, usually within minutes. An exclusive lead is sold to one buyer only. Exclusive leads cost more and are worth asking the vendor to prove.

How fast should I call a business loan lead?

+

For shared real-time leads, within minutes, because other funders are calling too. Outbound replies are less time-sensitive because nobody else received them, but a same-day call is still best.

Is buying business loan leads legal?

+

Yes, buying and selling B2B leads is legal. Calls and texts to those leads are covered by the TCPA, and emails by CAN-SPAM. Some states also regulate commercial finance brokers and disclosures, so check your own obligations.

Does Tentt Finance sell leads?

+

No. We run outreach under your name to every business in your buy box, on a monthly retainer. Replies come to you, and nobody else receives them.

Is lead generation for business loans legal?

+

Yes. Generating and selling B2B leads is legal in the US. Emails must follow CAN-SPAM, and calls and texts must follow the TCPA. Some states also regulate commercial finance brokers, so check what applies to you.

Where can I buy business loan leads?

+

From lead vendors that sell aged, shared, exclusive or live transfer leads. Ask each one how leads are generated and who else receives them. Or skip buying and run outreach to your own buy box under your own name.
